I bought the book 2 years ago, waiting on my bookshelf crying all the time ' read me, read me'. Today I red the last page and closed the book.
I must say during the time I was reading the book I was only physically present. Mentally I was walking aside Amelia traveling with her, feeling the tortures, the courage, the love and the pain she endured.
It's been a long time I've been reading such a good novel.
Thank you Julia Navarro

I am in love with Spanish writers. And if they wrote historical fiction, I just simply adore them.
But Julia Navarro's present story it is filled with action, espionage, love, trust, war, friendship, humiliation, anger, fear and so on.
I simply loved this book and I was just so anxious to see where it took me all the way. Only one fault I have to give: the fact that the author wanted to go with the fact according to their reality and even Guillermo was a bit pissed off about that. He preferred k...more

This is my first book review and I recently finished Dime quién soy by Julia Navarro. It is a Spanish book and I experienced the epic tail through a Spanish audiobook. It is a massive book approx. 1000 pages, just under 30 hours of audio. I loved every minute.
The book revolves around Guillermo piecing together the long, riveting and extraordinary life of his great, great grandmother: Amelia Garayoa. The story begins in Madrid, Spain but shifts to countri...more

The first full-length novel I've read, and read with pleasure. That's a breakthrough for me, which comes some 10 years after I first began studying Spanish. I used an English version of the book as a backup. Both were on my Kindle so it was easy to switch back and forth. I used Google Translate, too, preferring to speak the Spanish into it and hear the translation in English. It took me many months to get through the book, but it was a good story that kept my interest. As I moved slowly through,...more

In enjoyed this book. It's about a self-directed, willful woman in Spain during the Spanish civil war and WWII. She has wild love affairs and travels the world as a spy for Britain and later the US. Some of her achievements are a bit unrealistic, yet the story is so good, you don't care. The book seems to follow history well during these time periods.
The book is so long (almost 1100 pages) that at times my sense of reading justice was disturbed. I felt like I should have gotten the satisfaction...more

At times very fun, but not the best. The story is outrageous but I like that -- international intrigue and adventure. Communism. Romance. A lot of completely unbelievable circumstances and events that I am usually willing to forgive.
What bothered me about the book was the presentation style -- that of a young man researching the life of his great-grandmother. I think ultimately the presentation distances the reader from the main characters and makes them feel less compelling/vivid. It added not...more

An exhausting 1,200 pages that I thought would never end. The main character is like a cockroach- she just doesn't die.
I'm not sure why I stuck with this book, I guess I hoped it would get better.
To be fair- I read this immediately after Tiempo Entre Costuras and because the stories are so similar and because Tiempo was so good, the comparison was not favorable for this book.

For me, this book was annoying from start to finish. There is a hero that is extremely naive and everybody is hostile to him and annoyed by his actions but nevertheless agrees to pay his expenses and clears obstacles out of his way. The dialogs are so fake, they don’t work. The explanations given when a resolution is needed to move the story on are also pretty simplistic. Maybe this book will be appreciated by readers who are not familiar with the historical events but those who know the facts o...more
Probably the best ending of any book I read. A book that perfectly combines family drama, war, traveling all around the world and historical facts.

I listened to this book in Spanish. I'm not aware if there is an English translation yet. I believe there should be a translation for the US market so people here would understand better what people go through when war is fought in their own country. Of course, there are always immigrants arriving from war zones, but the last war in the US was in the 1800's and there isn't anyone alive who lived through it. So, back to the book, I loved it as a history lesson. I managed to finish college without...more

There was something in the prose of the book that kept bothering me; still now, after finishing, I'm not fully sure what it was... probably the great-grand-child who narrates the story and who doesn't seem to add anything to the story. Other than that, I loved the story of the great grand mother. Julia Navarro has done a great job documenting the historical moment which is quite an achievement taking into account that the book covers from the Spanish Civil War, the 2nd World War and finishes wit...more

Worth reading maybe more for it's historical examination of the times, but I rank it pretty average.
I didn't like the writing style - a lot of short choppy sentences. This could be due to having been translated?? I also got tired of the protagonist's many travels. That ploy got old after the first few rounds.
Based on feedback from others in our book club, I took the trouble to set out a rough family tree from the beginning. That did help some in keeping the players in line. The ending was bett...more

This book sucks! It's one of the lamest stories ever. Without any twists everything is just straight forward and the main characters are boring. The 'journalist' who isn't able to do any research by himself and always needs people that are pointed out to him and happen to know exactly what he needs. The writing doesn't change a bit if the story shifts from one character telling it to another. And don't want to spoil the end but I was thinking 'what? This is it? It's a great book, one of the bests that I have read. It's very well writen and it's an amazing book for people who want to know how people lived in Europe in the 20 century.

I started reading (listening, really) to this book when we were living in Colombia. The plot follows the investigations of an out of work journalist, who has been contracted by his family to research the history of his long lost great grandmother. The novel started out slowly, but grew more compelling as the protagonist continued to learn more about the incredibly complicated life of his great grandmother. I personally enjoyed that the novel centered on the life of a female character immersed in...more
Quite a story! Captivating but much too long. I read the English edition ('Tell me who I am'), and many times felt that perhaps the English translation needed editing, but someone reading the Spanish version said it could have used editing as well. I did find myself staying up into the wee hours to find out what happened in each phase of the main character's life. The book doubles as an encompassing history of the twentieth century, and the author gives much detail that helps enhance her tale. T...more
My first experience with Julia Navarro's books was with 'La Sangre de los Inocentes' and I was really disappointed by it. The books was nothing as I expected it to be and I kind of have ruled her out for my future readings. However, when looking for a new book to read, a friend recommended this book, and since we have shared good recommendations before I decided to follow her advice.

This was the longest book I have slogged through in some time, and there were several times I thought it would abandon it. The way the story was actually constructed, that there was a great grandson whose family hired him to reconstruct his grandmothers life, was mostly plausible. That everyone he met spoke in exactly the same voice often meant I felt that this was not a very useful way to tell this story, and more than once I was frustrated about this. However, that the author used this woman's...more

I picked this book randomly and it didn’t disappoint me. The main character is adventurous and goes places all around the world, almost making you feel as if you were in those places. Through the book many important historical events take place like the Spanish civil war, WWII, the Cold War and the fall of Berlin’s wall.

I bought this book when I was still working in London as a Spanish Teacher. I spent hours poring over the Spanish Literature books in Foyles on Charing Cross Road.
At 1097 pages, it is a tome of a book. I stopped and started it, I took it to Japan on honeymoon and almost gave up on it but thanks to my husband’s encouragement, I brought it home with me and finished it. It took me a year from buying it to finishing it, which is rare for me.

Not really sure where I stand on this book. For once, I enjoyed a bit of history from a character that was not German, nor Russian during the War World II. I enjoyed the story over all, but there were lots of times when I felt the story is just dragging on, somehow repeating itself, especially all the parts where Guilermo travels back and forth to find out things about Amelia.. I think it was way too long and I would have given it 5 stars if not for the length..

Well written, an excellent historical novel. It travels through history showing the horror of the war and the fight for survival under extreme conditions.
An impressive page turner even for the not historical books kind.
An impressive page turner even for the not historical books kind.
I felt totally cheated after finishing this book. The plot is entertaining, the story holds pretty well, and the characters are attractive. However, after more than a thousand pages, I expect for the author to take the time to give the book a decent end. And I don’t refer to the content, I’m fine with how it ends. It is the fact that she rushes through it in two pages that feel insufficient.
This is a beautiful story of strength, history, and life. Nothing is made pretty or romantic everything is brutal to show you what happened during the dark years of Europe's history but also through the viewpoint of Amelia. Its great to see a strong female character and to learn how you overcome.

This book fascinated the most for the historic aspect, not sure if the characters were so strong and the actions taken by the main character always believable, but it is written good enough to not let go. More than 1000 pages took a long time though.
